Exercise A
Reflection/In-class exercise: Sketch (design) a machine/device that you think will enhance your creativity
Lecture 1 offered a sneak peek
into the world of design - something that I am familiar, but not entirely
comfortable with (as I’m inexperienced with design). As a visual person myself,
I enjoy interpreting images and understanding the context behind it. "A
picture speaks a thousand words" - this lecture reinforced my
understanding on how design can be a powerful tool of communication to bring
forth meanings that words cannot simply contain.
Towards the end of the lecture, Professor Kaien asked us to sketch a machine or device that we think could enhance our creativity. I drew the above.
It is a pair of glasses that shows dynamic images of nature.
I racked my brain in search for inspiration to be more
creative when it dawned on me, that the child-like me would have a better shot
at being creative than the me today.
The me today is constrained by societal norms that I have
learnt and grow accustomed to over time. The should-dos and the not-to-dos –
things that the child-me would never be concerned with. The younger me did not
have a mobile phone. She enjoyed the playground, the parks, the travelling, and
spending time with nature. She was unrestrained by the grip of
technology– a privilege that children today are unable to experience. Being in
nature allowed her mind to roam freely, and her creative juices to flow.
To be creative – is to come up with original ideas involving
an imaginative mind. But we are far too used to everything, that being creative
would be a challenge. Therefore, I drew this machine in hope of re-enacting my
childhood experience, and to think out of the box by taking a moment to
appreciate nature in this time where we are so overwhelmed by technology.
